Mission Statement

Serviam’s mission is to provide accurate and actionable information about private sector solutions to promote global stability. We address users and consumers of private goods and services in the humanitarian relief, national development, security and military sectors; government and private providers of such goods and services; and government entities involved in decisions that determine or influence trends in this growing industry.

The magazine shares useful information and provokes thoughtful dialogue about complex global security and stability problems, such as:

  • maintaining stability and security in the aftermath of natural and man-made catastrophes;
  • delivering humanitarian relief to victims of poverty, conflict and disaster;
  • deterring and responding to domestic and international terrorist threats;
  • force and mission augmentation and logistics in hot conflicts; and
  • innovating and developing technologies and training to ensure mission success.

What is “Serviam”?

ServiamMags

Serviam is Latin for “I will serve.” Service to humanity is the credo of this magazine. We are unabashed about our professional editorial commitment to old-fashioned values: God and country. Love of neighbor. Hard work and innovation. Entrepreneurship. Just compensation for honest work done well. Reward for risk-taking. Accountability and integrity. Efficiency. Safety and prosperity. Defense of the defenseless. Stewardship of the investments of shareholders and taxpayers. Respect for the law. Charity and mercy. That’s our vision for the global stability industry.

That’s what we mean by serviam.

  • government decision makers in the executive and legislative branches who influence or determine the usage of private suppliers for global stability operations;

Serviam: A Powerful Advertising Environment

Serviam is the world’s first magazine for the private global stability solutions industry. It is the only magazine that integrates all the elements of global stability—from humanitarian relief, search and rescue, and national development to the intelligence, law enforcement, military and security sectors that protect and defend to make relief and development possible. Serviam provides a powerful advertising environment to reach those who are shaping the industry from inside and out.

Written by and for its audience

No other magazine knows the global stability industry like Serviam. Because Serviam’s editors and writers are veteran professionals from all sectors of the industry.

Our editors and writers have served at all levels of government in Congress and the executive branch, in the military services, law enforcement and intelligence agencies, and private and public security services. They have run, contracted with or volunteered for humanitarian relief organizations and other charities, missionary causes, and national reconstruction and development programs. Others have had careers as professional journalists who covered insurgencies and counterinsurgencies, conventional wars, natural disasters, civil strife, famines and plagues, crime fighting and law enforcement, fire and rescue, and peace and reconciliation processes.

About the Publisher

James T. deGraffenreidWith years of success in the defense publishing industry, business and philanthropy, James T. deGraffenreid finds publishing Serviam to be one of his most rewarding media endeavors yet. DeGraffenreid, president of EEI Communications, the publishing think tank on the banks of the Potomac River across from the nation’s capital, puts a stress on the call to service implied in the magazine’s name. “Serviam is a unique magazine that acts as an umbrella for and about all sectors of an emerging industry that is very diverse and not yet aware of its identity,” deGraffenreid says. “It’s a challenge to bridge between and among the for-profit worlds of suppliers of goods and services to nonprofit relief and development charities. And bridge yet again from the local street cops and hospitals to the farthest-flung humanitarian catastrophes of the world. Especially when many of the constituent groups find little if anything in common with one another.

“They’re all working their hardest, all doing their best, but they don’t always realize that they’re on the same side. Sometimes they think they are on different missions, when from our global stability perspective, their end mission is the same. That’s why we started Serviam. To make those connections.”

EEI Communications has years of relations with the charities, companies and government agencies that comprise the global stability sector. On top of that, deGraffenreid was a president at Phillips Publishing International, a major information supplier to the defense, aviation, telecommunication and energy industries. He contributed to the company’s growth from $65 million to over $325 million in annual revenue. He later served as COO of the U.S. Naval Institute, a publisher of military books and the monthly Proceedings magazine. Jim deGraffenreid has donated a lot of his time to charitable causes in the defense field. In addition to serving on various boards, he is a longtime member of the Plebe Sponsor Program at the United States Naval Academy and a booster of the Young Marines Program and The Navy League.

Who Should Subscribe

Still stuck in one of those stovepipes that the 9/11 Commission said had to go? Serviam can help. We don’t look at homeland security, humanitarian relief, private military and security solutions, or any of the dozens of related parts of global stability operations through a narrow scope. We take the big-picture, strategic approach. Here are some of the professions that fit in that picture:

  • local and state first responders: search and rescue, fire departments, law enforcement, hospitals, National Guard, emergency volunteers;
  • anyone involved with homeland security and disaster preparedness issues at all levels—not only first responders but also officers concerned with immigration, drug enforcement, security, counterterrorism and emergency management;
  • elected officials, including mayors, town and city council members, sheriffs and judges, and state and federal lawmakers and their staffs;
  • for-profit providers of goods and services in the disaster relief, humanitarian aid, insurance, logistics, security and defense sectors;
  • information providers and managers, from journalists and data companies to public and private intelligence services; and
  • domestic and international humanitarian aid workers, emergency relief and national development charities, educational
    institutions, churches, civic organizations, unions and other nongovernmental organizations (NGOs).

Serviam also makes a great value-added premium for membership organizations. We can handle all fulfillment and even provide special inserts and wrappers customized to your organization’s specifications at a nominal cost.
